Episode 67: How to Repurpose Instagram Lives Into a Podcast (Apple + Spotify) with Gilly Garrett

How to Turn Instagram Lives and Short-Form Video Into a Thriving Podcast (with Gilly of Gilly's Organics & Everyday Rockstars)

Listen on Apple Podcast | Listen on Spotify | Watch on YouTube

Have you ever thought about using Instagram Lives as your podcast episodes?

That's exactly what my guest Gilly did — and it's one of the most creative podcast origin stories I've heard.

Gilly is the founder of Gilly's Organics, an organic skincare line nearly 20 years in the making, and the host of Everyday Rockstars, a podcast celebrating entrepreneurs, creatives, and community leaders doing incredible things.

What started as short Instagram Live interviews for a local New Jersey magazine turned into a six-year run of 14-minute Zoom conversations edited for Instagram — and eventually, a full podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

In this episode of Podcast Growth Tools, Gilly shares the behind-the-scenes story of how her show evolved, what podcasting has done for her product-based business, how she approaches interviews with confidence (even when she's nervous), and how she launched her newest venture — the Rockstar Collective — all fueled by the relationships and reach her podcast created.

If you're a business owner wondering whether podcasting is worth it, or if you've been doing content on social media and wondering how to take it further, this episode is your sign.

Why AI Is Becoming a Major Podcast Discovery Engine

People are no longer just browsing podcast apps.

They’re asking questions like:

  • “What are the best podcasts for female entrepreneurs?”

  • “What podcast should I listen to if I want to grow my business?”

  • “What are the best marketing podcasts right now?”

And AI is answering.

That means your podcast is now competing in a much broader ecosystem. Not just podcast platforms, but the entire internet.

The opportunity here is massive. But only if your content is structured in a way AI can understand.

Because if it’s not clear, specific, and keyword-driven, your podcast simply won’t show up.

From Instagram Lives to a Full Podcast: Gilly's Journey

Gilly's podcast journey didn't start the traditional way. She was hired by a local magazine in Bergen County, New Jersey — Be Local Bergen — to interview community members doing interesting things. For three years, she conducted short Instagram Live and Zoom interviews, editing them down to 14 minutes so they'd fit Instagram's format.

When people outside of New Jersey started asking to be on her show, Gilly launched Everyday Rockstars as its own brand — still as an Instagram show.

The turning point came when she heard a conversation between Kylee and Kathy Heller on Kathy's podcast. The insight that even a small audience of 60 people is worth showing up for hit her hard. She reached out to Kathy, booked her as a guest, and realized their conversation couldn't possibly fit into 14 minutes. That night, she signed up for Buzzsprout and put Everyday Rockstars on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Six months in, and she's never looked back.

Why Small Download Numbers Can Still Drive Big Business Results

One of the most powerful moments in this conversation is Gilly's story about a single podcast appearance — not even on her own show — that led to a subscriber who has purchased her organic skincare products every single month for five years.

You never know who's listening.

This is a reminder that podcast growth isn't just about download numbers. It's about reaching the right people. Whether that's 60 listeners or 600, each one represents a potential customer, collaborator, or long-term relationship.

How to Conduct Better, More Natural Podcast Interviews

Gilly shared several insights about improving your interview skills as a podcast host:

Let your guest guide the conversation. When you're too rigid with your questions, you might miss where the guest actually wants to go. The best conversations happen when you follow their lead while keeping the overall direction in mind.

Prepare questions, but don't read them on camera. Gilly prepares questions ahead of time but treats them as a safety net rather than a script. This allows the conversation to feel organic while still having structure to fall back on.

Remember: everyone is just a person with a story. Whether you're interviewing someone with a massive following or a local business owner, the same principle applies — they said yes because they want to share their message. You're amplifying it.

Stop overthinking after you publish. It's tempting to replay the conversation in your head and wish you'd asked something differently. Gilly's advice: let it go and move on to the next one. It happened, it was good, and your audience loved it.

How Podcasting Fueled the Rockstar Collective

Gilly's newest venture — the Rockstar Collective — is a weekly group coaching community for women entrepreneurs. It grew organically from years of informally coaching women who came to her for business advice, starting all the way back when she helped female entrepreneurs through the crowdfunding platform iFund Women.

The podcast played a direct role. By interviewing inspiring entrepreneurs every week on Everyday Rockstars, Gilly attracted women who wanted to be part of that energy. The collective meets weekly on Wednesdays for goal-setting, guided meditations, honest conversation, and mutual support — and it's become a natural extension of the podcast itself.
